Long before a star is formed, there are small particles amidst the dust and gas up there in the atmosphere-they are constantly moving about and then, when the conditions are right, they fuse together. It might be that a passing comet forces these particles together -the result is a ball of hydrogen and helium that over millions of year, burns and shines -as a star!
